dream #1: the stolen wallets

it was the way it had been a month ago: megs, chris, jesse, and brady were all visiting to work on the piece and bear was still here. we were unpacking lunches at two circular plastic tables with white-and-yellow umbrellas--pool furniture, right next to a vast square swimming pool, with a red brick building on the other side. i ran off to the bathroom in the red brick building. it was actually the main building at my school. as i passed the box office, someone poked her head out the ticket window and said, "hey, jen! are you looking for a job?" it was deborah, a friend of sean's family, who works at usc. i said hi, and actually i wasn't looking for a job right then, but i had a great friend who was. "it's just for the summer, but it pays well," deborah said. "go get your friend."

so i ran skipping across the courtyard past the big pool. "megan megan megan megan megs megs megs!!!" says i. megan looks at me askance over turkey and avocado on rye. [why do i know this? i don't know, but i knew that very well.] "i gots you a job!" i said. "oh yay!" said megs, leaping up. "does it start in april, or in may!"

i felt a sinking sensation. "now," i said. it was july. megs sat back down. there was disappointment lingering in the air. "i'm so sorry, hon," i said. "i thought you wanted a job right away." megs shrugged, trying to play it off, but it was clear how let down she felt. i felt like a tool. after a moment, i went digging through my backpack. "i've gotta wash up before i eat," i said. there was a pause. "you know, megs," i said finally. "why don't we go and ask deb if she has anything free right now? even if she doesn't, maybe she'll know someone at school who does." megs smiled a bit, and agreed. "oh," chris said. "are you just going back to the apartment? i'll come with you. my teeth feel kinda sticky."

so we went back to the red brick building, and megs left us at the box office, and we kept walking, eventually coming to a comfy sort of apartment with a high glass wall on one side. it looked rather like a hunting lodge--dark wood, driftwood sculptures, landscape watercolors. i went to wash my face, and started feeling a little better. megs would totally get a job. and it was great having folks in town. i put some toothpaste on the brush and went into the hallway to pace around while i was brushing, starting to hum the bassline of "summer lovin'" from "grease".

in the living room, chris was already brushing his teeth, and (in a muffled way) humming the melody from the same song. and, what's more, the background music was playing. so i started humming olivia newton-john's part, while chris hummed the john travolta part, still both brushing our teeth. and we ended up having this dancey musical theater extravaganza, running around on the cushions of the couches and on the coffee table and in front of the fireplace, all the while grooving to the song. our teeth were getting pretty clean, but we knew that if we stopped brushing our teeth, the background music would stop. we'd worked our way through to the point where the song's about to modulate when we both turned around to the glass wall of the apartment. the background music made that screechy sound effect as it stopped, and there were two young men standing there, one of them pointing a very large gun at us. behind them was a standard school public entrance (handicapped button and all), which neither of us had seen until then.

"give me your wallet," he said. he looked like a teenager, with a black bandana on his head. he seemed really nervous and angry, strung out.

"i don't have my wallet here," i said (now sans toothbrush and paste), quite truthfully.

"then you!" he barked at chris, still pointing the gun at me. chris gave him a sort of assessing look, then slowly went to his bag and pulled out a smooth brown leather wallet. it looked quite full. it occurred to me that chris must have just closed his checking account in louisville, and that might be all the money he had. he slowly approached the boy with the gun, who grabbed the wallet and grinned. "come by my apartment tonight at 5:30. you'll get your wallet back." then he laughed, and bolted out of the room.

the other boy stayed. he was asian and wearing baggy jeans and a white t-shirt. his face looked like a guy in a class i was in recently, but his clothes reminded me of friends from alhambra. "i'm so sorry about this," he said quickly. "something's wrong with him and i don't know what. i'll try to get your wallet back for you. if you come with me we can try to figure this out."

chris and i exchanged a look. we both had deep misgivings, but we followed the boy out to a white minivan. when we got inside, there was a teenage girl sitting on the first bench seat, wearing a burgundy taffeta prom dress (the kind that shimmers to black depending on the angle) and a white rose corsage. she looked at us. "so you're stuck in this now, too," she said, not unkindly. "i rented this limo specially for tonight and i haven't seen him for five minutes yet." she picked morosely at her corsage and then exchanged a look of deep sadness and worry with her boyfriend's friend. i looked around the car. (we were in a limo now.) there didn't seem to be any weird things in the car, so chris and i both relaxed.

"i think i know where he'd go with the money," the friend said. he rolled down the dividing window and spoke to the driver. a minute later, we were off. "i wish we could still make it to prom," said the girlfriend quietly.

chris looked thoughtfully around the limo. "you know, this is a really great limo," he said. "i've never been in one before. thanks for letting us ride in it." she perked up a little. "you like it?" she said. chris and i both assured her that it was amazingly cool. (it was.) we ate pretzels from the minibar and looked out the tinted windows and had a pretty good time. eventually, it came out that her name was andy, and people made fun of her for it because it's a boy's name. the friend's name was anna, and people made fun of him too. andy wanted to go to college someday; anna didn't know where he wanted to go, as long as it was anything that could get him out of this city. this reminded me of my alhambra friends again, and the drive was quiet for a while.

"jen, why do people always say i'm brilliant?" chris said, after some time. he was looking out the tinted window.

"because you are, hon," i said, smiling wanly and feeling guilty that i haven't been composing more.

he shifted, frustrated. "why doesn't anyone say that i'm kind, or maybe wise, or patient? is it just that i'm not those things?"

"of course not!" i said, getting genuinely worried. "your brilliance isn't what i think of first. you're generous with time and with energy and just in general. that's what i think." i stirred my cocktail (from the mini-bar) a little. "i think people just say that...because that's what they're thinking of or noticing first. compliments say just as much about the person giving them as they do about the person receiving them. who knows why it's one thing and not another? and you are brilliant. people can't help but notice that, and i think it's normal for them to want to comment on it."

he thought about it for a second. "i like that," he said.

"aren't you going to tell me how brilliant i am for thinking it up?" i said. we were laughing when the car stopped. we climbed out of a white minivan onto a grassland. it was mostly flat around us, but we were at the foot of a high but gently sloping hill. we'd been in the car for maybe an hour with no wrong turnings, but i could see the building we'd come from, about fifty feet away. anna and andy led the way up the slope, and near the top the four of us came across two people in a rocky enclave, looking like they were hiding. they introduced themselves; they were actors doing reshoots for "the lord of the rings". one was an extra, one was playing eowyn (though she wasn't miranda otto), and they weren't needed just then. we sat with them for a while. chris and i tried to wrangle details of "the return of the king" from them--subtlety did not work, nor did begging. eventually i just asked her what she thought of acting with elijah wood. eowyn paused thoughtfully, and eventually said, "it's really quite strange, honestly. i know he doesn't look it on film, but he's really quite womanly. pear-shaped figure, and he likes to do all these girly things."

"well, that's why we want him to do more movies," said an old woman, peering in a friendly way from around the rock. "so he can be a better actor." she went on talking about how much elijah needed help as she led the six of us up the hill. "i thought he did a really good job," i said. she looked at me with a bit of compassion and said sadly, "you would, dear." we kept walking. "brilliance is fleeting," i said, with a bit of drama. chris giggled.

as the slope started to level out, we started to see giant animal tracks--like elephant prints, only about two feet in diameter. we started getting more nervous. "i hope he made it okay," said anna quietly. the animal was clearly some kind of monster--it had such huge feet and a weird gait, from the look of it. we reached the top of the hill with growing dread, a big plateau with a small stand of trees on the opposite side. suddenly, we heard rustling in the trees and everyone flattened themselves hastily on the ground.

"it's the monster!" cried andy. it was quiet, though. eventually, i looked up and saw the thing behind the trees. "thank god," i said aloud. "it's not a monster--it's a string quartet!"

it was a very bewildered string quartet, carrying their instruments and bows out of their cases, some struggling with stands and music, too. a boy had come through like a madman with a gun and stolen their wallets, they said in clumsy english. they were hungarian and had thought this would be a nice place to practice. wait 'til i tell meg and gabe, i thought to myself. we offered to sit with them a while, and pulled bread and cheese out of backpacks and were sitting down for a picnic lunch--

"jen? jen?" someone was shaking me awake. i opened my eyes. we were in a hotel room, one in orlando that we'd stayed in last december, and mom was shaking me awake. "what is it?" i slurred.

"lynn's sick and can't sleep. do you have anything she could read?"

"probably," i said, and lumbered to the closet. a giant set of shelves with all my books was inside. "lynn, are you okay?"

"yeah," she said faintly. "i just need something to read while i'm up."

i picked through the shelves and called out titles, but she didn't feel like reading anything i had. eventually, tucked behind the shelf against the wall, there was a volume of winnie-the-pooh, which she took happily. "that's weird," i thought. "i didn't know we had winnie-the-pooh."

the next day, we boarded a jet home, one that was set up inside like the zeppelin in the last indiana jones movie, with tables and chairs and cocktail waiters. security was extra tight, though. there was a system of brightly flashing lights built into the wings, that someone kept programming to flash patterns indicating out exact status. mom didn't want us to sit near the other people, though, and she found a row of isolated seats against the back wall of the jet for us. across the way, a sad-looking family was doing the same. "why are we sitting back here, mom?" i said. she looked at me sternly. "you don't want anyone to steal your wallet, do you?" she said.
