facial recognition
categories ::Heh. I'm watching the commentary to "House of Flying Daggers" right now. It's so righteous. There are two lead men in the movie, and they apparently were worried that Western audiences wouldn't be able to tell them apart, or recognize one of them when he changes costumes and goes undercover. So they have the undercover guy eat peanuts in all the scenes that could be ambiguous. But then Zhang Yimou (the director) and Zhang Ziyi (the female lead) start talking about how it's just like how they can't tell Westerners apart. Zhang Yimou gives up after about ten minutes, if it's not a major movie star. Zhang Ziyi has to go by the bridge of the nose, whose is higher than whose. Or, failing that, hair color.
I thought that was totally fascinating, because hair color is the big thing I go for after skin color, when I'm trying to get a few defining characteristics for a person. I always assumed that, when an occasional white person says that Asians all look alike, it was mildly understandable (albeit totally tasteless to say) because there's one natural hair color for Asians, as opposed to several. That's what kept me from getting angry, even though I viscerally felt like it was such a racist thing to say.
That's another thing. Is it a racist thing to say? Why has it rubbed me the wrong way when people have said such things in the past? Why didn't it bother me on the commentary? I think it has a lot to do with the way things are being said. On the commentary, people are just kind of giggling about it. When people have told me in the past that all Asians look alike, it's always been in the context of how "you people" look alike. How inconsiderate of billion-plus Asian people in the world to inconvenience you in this way. Or it's been said in this sort of chummy, surely-you-don't-mind-do-you kind of way, in which the speaker seems to feel they're saying something wrong but assumes that I'll indulge them, because for some reason that's my job. Or, in a more extreme case, it would be like my debate coach in high school, who addressed all the Asian students interchangeably as "yin" and "yang".
I think culturally/individually constructed sensitivities in facial recognition is totally okay with me. I think that's actually really cool and fascinating. It's like the (interesting-but-apparently untrue?) idea that the Inuit have a billion different words for "snow", or the (totally true) linguistics paper I read about how different cultures draw the line between "blue" and "green" in different places, if they draw the line at all. The way in which we draw distinctions could just be a social construct. That's cool. I bet there are some neat papers about that. Or there should be, dammit, if they aren't.
So here's a poll for all you folks out there: this isn't about remembering a particular face. Imagine you're at a crowded party, or it's your first day at a new school, or something similar. You have about fifty new people that you'll be introduced to in the span of an hour. What will you do to try to remember who is who?
For me, I go like this:
1) Unusual traits (Really, really tall, for instance. Hi, Magenta! Hi, Joshua!)
2) Skin (Mostly color, but if you're totally acne-free and glowing, I notice. Because I'm jealous. If I'm in a room with people of all the same ethnic group or race, I skip this.)
3) Hair (Mostly color, but also length and texture.)
4) Hands (If we shake hands, I remember what your hands feel like. This doesn't really help much, because I see you before I shake hands with you, and it's not like we'll keep shaking hands every time we meet. But I remember it.)
After that, I pretty much give up. Which is probably why I'm so lame at remembering faces. Apparently, everybody looks the same to me.

There's some really fascinating research I've read (both neuropsychological and experimental) out there on expertise in general, and in faces in particular. I can look it up, if you'd like.
And you're absolutely right about the color thing; that's one of the topics I've been studying. How language/culture influences thought isn't huge, but there is an effect on a minimal level.
Sorry, you just touched on two topics in my field that are some of my favorite things to read about! :)
FWIW, we stereotype and categorize items/people because it makes cognitive processing more efficient. We'd have a lot of trouble dealing with the consistent flow of information we receive without doing this, so I'm hesitant to say it's a bad thing or that we should be able to not do this. So, cognitively, it's understandable. What's obviously important is respecting each person as an individual, while using physical traits to help us get familiar with identifying the person in the first place.
What I notice first is similar to your list. Unusual physical information like height, then skin tone, then hair color, and then usually distinctive facial characteristics.

Now that I've had a nap and thought about it more, I think I was really talking about two very different things in a rather sloppy way: 1) how neat it is (I think) that the creation and fine-tuning of categories seems to be such a product of experience, and 2) how lame some people can be when they think their experience-based categories actually speak to some sort of cosmic truth.
The first I think is just really interesting. I don't mean to suggest at all that I think categorization is a bad thing--I mean, even if I did think such a thing, what would I expect anybody else to do about it? But it also has interesting implications to me. I imagine that racism not only stems from in-group bias or a simple "they look different, so booo!!!" sort of impulse. I imagine that, say, in the case of my narsty debate coach, the inability to tell one Asian student from another contributed to a sense that, because they *look* the same to him, they *are* the same. (This is all sounding really obvious now that I'm typing it out. Shame.) But this idea of sameness is a kind of dehumanization. People seem foreign, seem "other", because there's a sense that they're not "real" people in the same way that the person observing them is.
I also was surprised by how gleeful I felt when that little bit in the commentary came up. Like there was some part of me saying: "you mean we *don't* look the same?!" Because, while I'd never thought that myself, I feel as though I've been silently told the opposite all my life.

I try to remember names, and usually hair. Most people try to have individualhair. also i try to remember clothes, Reddress lady, brown hat guy, stuff like that. im just glad i dont go to parties that people change their clothes every five minutes.
